Teen Gynecology
Teenage girls are in a transitional stage of development from girl to young woman. During this stage of life, young female bodies mature and unique health concerns are experienced. Puberty
As a girl begins to mature, her body will begin to change in a variety of ways. These are natural occurrences and can begin as early as eight years old. Around 12 years old, menstruation, commonly called a “period” will begin.
Menstrual Disorders
From the time young girl begins her period, it can be hard to tell the difference between a normal and abnormal period. Sometimes the period is skipped or there may be excessive bleeding, or the period may change a lot. Identification and treatment of these disorders are available.
First Gynecologic Visit
Girls should have their first gynecologic visit between the ages of 13 and 15 years old. Gynecologists are doctors that specialize in women’s health care. We have a variety of male and female providers and a group of caring nurses that make these visits as comfortable as possible.
Birth Control
It is very important for teenage girls to get the facts about their changing body, women’s health, sex and birth control. There are a variety of differing birth control methods that have their own risks and side effects. Understanding teenage birth control options is essential to the health and well-being of the individual.
Sexually Transmitted Infection
A sexually transmitted infection (STI) also known as sexually transmitted disease (STD) is an infection that is transferred from one individual to another through sexual contact. STIs are easily spread and can cause severe health issues including death.
Having a Baby
Becoming pregnant at any age is difficult on the mother’s body. As a teenager, there are additional health concerns and risks that need to be discussed with an obstetrician. An obstetrician, also known as an “OB doctor” is a physician that specializes in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care.
Vaginal Infections
Vaginal infections, also known as vaginitis, are inflammations of the vagina. This uncomfortable disease causes irritation, cloudy vaginal discharge, and unusual odor. There are many causes of vaginal infection which is why it is important to see one of our providers for appropriate treatment.
